By: Shalu Sharma Tao Te Ching (also known as Tao Te Ching, Daodejing, or Dao De Jing), the Chinese classic text is one of the most widely read books of all times. Legend has it that it was written by a Chinese sage called the Old Master called Lao Tzu (also known as Laozi). Although it is still debated who wrote it but it is thought that it was Lao Tzu a record keeper at the Zhou dynasty court compiled it. So far the best known translation of the Tao Te Ching is of James Legge who was a noted Scottish sinologist. His translation is considered as the most authoritative as he was fluent in Chinese and the first Professor of Chinese at Oxford University (1876–1897) The original Tao Te Ching is about 5000 Chinese characters with 81 small chapters. It is thought that some additional chapters may have been added in the form of commentaries. In this annotated edition with an introduction by Shalu Sharma, there is a history of Tao Te Ching and of James Legge and what Taoism is all about. Those wishing to learn Taoism and getting to understand Tao Te Ching in its best form will find this book very useful. Tao Te Ching is a book that cannot be read in a single sitting and certainly not an easy read by any means. Tao Te Ching is designed to be read slowly and over a period of time and taking time to digest what it’s all about. Hence this book will be useful to those learning Taoism and about Chinese culture.
