Submission deadline: Aug. 28, 2015 E-mail submissions to: SUBMISSIONS@ *Authors please be aware that monologues and scenes may be woven together for theatrical value. Tinges of humour preferred* Two formats sought for proposed 2016 run: *10 - 20 min. scenes reflecting on Bree Newsome and her recent take-down of the Confederate flag in Charleston, South Carolina. Characters: No more than 5 women on stage at one time. Set/props: Minimal *10-20 min. monologues directly/indirectly commenting on Bree Newsome/Charleston events from the point view of the following historical figures: Vernice Armour - first AA female combat pilot in the U.S. Armed Forces. Josephine Baker - dancer, singer, actor, civil rights activist. Daisy Bates - civil rights activist, publisher, & journalist. Septima Poinsette Clark - educator,“Mother” Shirley Chisholm - Congresswoman, first AA woman to run for president. Claudette Colvin - first person arrested for resisting bus segregation in Montgomery, AL. Henrietta Vinton Davis - actor, playwright, International Organizer of the UNIA. Dorothy Dandridge - first AA actress nominated for anAcademy Award For Best Actress. Ruby Dee - actor, poet, playwright, screenwriter, journalist and activist Mae Jemison - physician and NASA astronaut, first AA woman to travel in space. Florence Griffith Joyner - track and field athlete, fastest woman of all time. Barbara Jordan - first black female elected to theUS House Of Representatives, gave the open remarks of Watergate hearings. Eslanda Goode Robeson - American anthropologist, author & civil rights activist, wife & of Paul Robeson. Angelina Weld Grimke - journalist, teacher, playwright and poet. Fannie Lou Hamer - voting rights activist, civil rights leader, Dorothy Height - civil rights and women's rights activist, awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom and Congressional Gold Medal. Bell Hooks - author, feminist, and social activist. Diane Nash -civil rights activist; helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Sister Rosetta Tharpe - singer, songwriter and musician, “the original soul sister.” Madam C.J. Walker - first female self-made millionaire in America. Ida B. Wells - journalist; activist for civil and women’s rights, NAACP co-founder. Harriet Tubman - abolitionist, over 13 trips, led approx 70 families to freedom, Union Army scout. Black Women: State of the Union... A theatrical and community event that represents and celebrates Black women as complex and resilient people. BWSOTU promotes greater understanding of Black women's significant contributions to the world through performance, visual arts, community events, and media. BWSOTU artists aim to use this platform to empower Black women to love and honor themselves, and to help them self-identify as dynamic, expressive, and nurturing contributors to society. BWSOTU artists communicate and express themselves to help Black women embrace the characteristics that make each of them different and unique--today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.
