Every person’s body structure is a little different, causing us to have a few weak spots in the bones and muscles which can lead to injury at any point. Common body structure factors that cause injury to ankles, legs, knees and hips can include uneven leg lengths, flat feet, high arches in the feet, and bowlegged or knock-knee bone alignment. Other body structure conditions that can cause injury include a forward curve in the lower spine, high kneecaps, or kneecaps that are not in the central position. Not having a balanced muscle structure can also lead to injury. Examples of this include having strong quadriceps, can cause the hamstring muscles to stretch or tear if they are not as strong. There are many common sports injuries, such as: Shin splints – pain can be felt around the front of the shin and starts immediately when the heel strikes the ground. Or the pain can be felt on the inner part of the shin and increases in intensity when you stand on your toes. Achilles Tendinitis - the Achilles tendon (the tendon that attached the calf muscles to the back of the heel bone) can become damaged if you participate in sports that include a lot of running and jumping. When the Achilles tendon becomes injured, it feels tender when squeezed between your fingers. It is recommended that you never exercise when you have an Achilles tendon injury until it is healed. Lumbar strain - sudden pain will appear in the lower back when you are twisting or lifting, as with golf, baseball and weightlifting. Lateral and Medial Epicondylitis - commonly referred to as Tennis Elbow and Golfer's Elbow. Both references tend to make people think of an injury that can only occur while you are playing tennis or golf; though they can also be a result of manual work or other tasks of daily living. Any tendon that has become injured can go through permanent changes if there is not enough time allowed for it to heal. Treating a sports injury will typically follow the RICE principle: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Rest will help to stop bleeding and any further injury from taking place. Ice reduces swelling and helps to ease pain. Compression and elevation limit the amount of swelling and fluid accumulation in the injured area. The two best ways you can prevent a sports injury from occurring are: using the right equipment and following a stretching and cooling down period before and after each activity. Equipment plays a large part of many different sports, so by using and wearing properly fitted helmets, padding, or shoes, can help to prevent many serious injuries from happening. Stretching will help to improve muscle performance, and is good to use following exercise. Also having a cool down period after activity helps to prevent blood from pooling in dilated leg veins.
