WORTHING, U.K. - Aug. 16, 2015 - PRLog -- Debut novelist Sue Knight wonders if Bill Bryson took his inspiration from her recently published novelette, Till They Dropped, when he said, “We used to build civilizations. Now we build shopping malls.”

“Bryson’s words chime so well,” Sue tells me, “with the unease I’ve always felt at the Western world’s obsession with shopping.”

Despite its central theme, Till They Dropped is far from a Sophie Kinsella style treatise on the perils of shopping. It’s a slim volume that digs deep and sees the roots of future consumerism grow from a 1950’s bow wave of optimism that welled up from two world wars.

Now retired from a career that was as varied in location as in areas of business, Sue has a wealth of experience to draw on from the industrial north of England to the Arabian deserts and the remote islands of the Indian Ocean.

The book has met critical acclaim as a ‘perfect gem of a story’ that ‘comes satisfyingly full circle yet ends on a shiver’. Dan Grubb, CEO of Fantastic Books Publishing, says, “I loved it, couldn’t put it down. I read it through in one go.”

Till They Dropped is Sue’s first published novelette but she has been a published poet since the early 1990’s. I ask if there are any more books in the pipeline. “A previous novel was accepted by a London agent,” Sue tells me, “but in the end she decided it would be too hard to place in the market of the time. With the way the world’s changed, I think I’ll get that manuscript out again and see how it looks in 2015.”

Further questioning uncovers this forgotten novel to be an eco-thriller set in the scuba diving world of the Maldives. Dan Grubb, CEO of Fantastic Books Publishing, gives me a grin as he says, “That agent’s loss is going to be my gain. I’m not the only reader now craving more from Sue Knight.”
