New Collective, The Theorists, Bring Dance Outside With Free Full-Length Premiere

The Theorists, a new collaborative of Austin artists, presents their first evening-length work, "String Theory," on October 21 at the Zilker Hillside Theater, free and open to the public at 7 PM.

AUSTIN, Texas - Sept. 10, 2015 - PRLog -- The work The Theorists explore is delicate but powerful, subtle yet speaks volumes. Today, two dancers execute detailed and daring movement with such precision and certainty; the viewer almost loses sight of the single white string the dancers fly along like a zip-line. Under director Amy Morrow's intent gaze, the dancers navigate and negotiate leaps, turns, dives and each other’s bodies all without losing contact with the string. This delicate and deliberate connection, with each other and the thread creates the crucial frequency on which "String Theory" vibrates.

“I’m inspired by scientists, musicians and madmen,” said Morrow. “Ballet, like logic, is unforgiving. Yet, choreography, like science, explores unknown variables in a system of wonder with infinite hypothesis testing and form expressions. Dance is a madman’s maze and choreography our twine. People don¹t have to understand ‘String Theory’ to experience it; allow it to unsnarl their fantasies and fears, with the hope that they are not alone.”

The Theorists, Morrow along with dancers Hailley Lauren and Rachel Meador, aim to explore performance-making as a collaborative experience where professional dancers, choreographers, even designers, photographers and musicians contribute to the creation process. More than 130 artists from around the country have participated in Morrow’s inaugural TBXS Workshop season, featuring seven intensives including Gaga, CounterTechnique and performance development Deborah Hay. Twelve of these workshop participants will join The Theorists onstage at the Zilker.

Morrow garnered serious attention as both a performer and choreographer when dance critic Nancy Wozny selected her solo, “The Lady Of,” as one of the 16 Standout Performances of Fall 2014, describing her movement quality as “a sassy mix of precision and abandon, something we rarely see on contemporary dance stages.” Morrow's "String Theory," the starting point for "String Theory" was originally commissioned for Dallas’s Avant Chamber Ballet’s inaugural Women’s Choreography Project.

“What could have been nothing but a clever gimmick – long silver strings stretching halfway the length of the stage – turned out to work magic,” wrote Margaret Putnam for Theater Jones. “How far you can stretch strings and what kind of sound comes forth seem to symbolize how far you can stretch relationships and time. Seldom do we see a work so fascinating.”

“Community is why we do what we do,” said Morrow. “People matter and places matter and dance is another way to find it together.”
