Follow on Google News | Innovative flood warning system keeps watch across Rhondda Cynon TafThe risk of flooding to thousands of homes and businesses across Rhondda Cynon Taf is set to be managed further as the Council becomes the first to use a British-developed maintenance-free camera system.
By: Meteor Communications By using specially developed NEXUS cameras, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is able to monitor the flows efficiently and mobilise resources effectively, therefore reducing the flood risk. Meteor’s bespoke system incorporates water level sensors and a rain gauge, all of which are monitored in real time and sent to a dedicated web portal. Readings are taken every 15 minutes and alarms are set up to warn environmental officers, so that any remedial action can be taken to avert a risk of flooding. Matt Dibbs, Managing Director of Meteor Communications, commented: “Our project with RCT Council, which is the first of its kind in Wales, has delivered a cost-effective means of essential monitoring for its recently installed flood alleviation infrastructure. Methods requiring mains power are expensive and also susceptible to damage but our solar powered, robust units have been designed to achieve 100% autonomous operation, even in the most exposed areas.” The Council’s flood alleviation programme, which began in 2014, was made possible thanks to £2.5m funding from the Capital Fund, the European Regional Development Fund and Welsh Government’s Flood Risk Management Grant. Meteor Communications has been designing, building and installing environmental monitoring and control solutions for over 25 years. Meteor provides a fully managed service, from conception to installation, to include data collection and analysis, controlled from its own data centre. Outstation monitoring units are designed and built in the UK, ensuring the highest level of quality and fast deployment. http://www.meteorcommunications.co.uk End
