NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Oct. 7, 2015 - PRLog -- – ZAMPELL COMPANIES – Zampell has completed the scaffold installation for a $12 million to $15 million restoration project of the USS Constitution at the Charlestown Navy Yard.

In March of 2014, a team from Zampell met with the caretakers of the iconic frigate, the Naval History and Heritage Command Detachment Boston (NHHC) to design a scaffold system to be used throughout the 30 month project. Experienced scaffold builders familiar with cone shaped vessels, large boilers and shipbuilding were crucial in developing a consistent approach to dealing with a challenging scaffold design. Working with engineers at Universal Manufacturing, a leading US
scaffold manufacturer based outside Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, Zampell designed and proposed a complete scaffold system to ensure access to every inch of the aged warship’s hull. “Engineering is the foundation of our success as a value added specialty contractor,” according to Brian Zampell, COO, when speaking of his company’s success. “By offering a technical approach in scaffolding, similar to what we do in our other services, we were able to provide a value-added solution to our client that resulted in Zampell being the successful contractor.”

More than a quarter of a million pounds of Universal System Scaffold components were used to complete the work platforms built to access the entire hull of USS Constitution. Mike Bredl, National Sales Manager for Universal Manufacturing Corp. expressed his thoughts regarding the project, “In order for the job to be successful Zampell provided knowledgeable scaffold designers, erectors and laborers to provide well-built scaffold. Their commitment to quality workmanship is consistent on every project.”

At 228 feet long by 60 feet wide and 45 feet tall, with work platforms every 6.5 feet in height, Zampell created a safe work environment for the Navy craftsmen to perform their work. Through partnering with the Naval Heritage and History Command Detachment (NHHC), scaffold materials were expedited to the work site which was down inside the dry dock. Senior Operations Manager, Joe Riccio, who is responsible for equipment and technical support for the project explains, “The Zampell approach exemplifies how construction practices, including engineered scaffold systems, have become safer and more efficient over the past 20 years.”

Safety is a priority for the Zampell Team according to Brian Zampell, “As a family business, the most important thing we can do is take care of our employees. The safe execution of our work is critical to operating a professional organization that can complete projects on time, on budget, and with zero incidents.”

“The USS Constitution in dry dock is a high profile scaffold project,” Brian Zampell continued, “It demonstrates to the Boston marketplace and beyond that Zampell can accomplish a complicated, large scale scaffold job, I am very proud of everyone on our team who made this happen.”

Zampell is a merit shop service organization that is chiefly involved with the engineering and installation of refractories, insulation, and scaffolding within the industrial and commercial sectors.
