Follow on Google News | Explaining what you can eat in bracesAn orthodontist explains what foods you can eat while in braces.
By: Dr. Aly Kanani Let’s start by talking about things you can eat, but should still use caution with. Those include: • Raw, crunchy vegetables • Hard fruit • Chips, such as tortilla chips • Corn on the cob • Crusty bread and bagels • Granola bars These can still be enjoyed, however, it’s important to use good judgment when eating these and similar foods. They can cause damage to your brackets and wires, so it’s best to cut them into bite sized pieces to enjoy. There are plenty of teenager approved snack foods you can still enjoy at your pleasure. They include: • Ice cream • Potato chips • Steamed vegetables • French fries • Pudding and Jell-o • Cheese • Milkshakes • Smoothies • Soft pretzels There will be days during your treatment when your mouth will be sore. The tenderness will only last a couple of days, but during these times especially, it’s important to rely on soft foods. Soups, milkshakes and smoothies are wonderful to snack on. It is also important to remember to carefully brush and floss after eating, while wearing braces, even after just a snack. Braces create lots of nooks and crannies for food particles to build up, leading to decay, so pay close attention to reaching all the spaces created by your braces. If you’ve chosen Invisalign to straighten your teeth, congratulations – you won’t need to alter your diet during treatment.
