Nov. 16, 2015 - PRLog -- The most reliable material used to produce injection vials, eyedropper bottles, syrup bottles and the most diverse pharmaceutical containers has always been, and probably will continue to be for a long time, glass. But not an ‘ordinary’ glass; on the contrary, several kinds of pharmaceutical materials exist. The most common ones are:

“Type I” glass: chemically speaking, this borosilicate glass is highly resistant. Therefore, it is suitable for the most different substances, including low pH fluids or corrosive solutions. Generally, delamination issues do not affected it.

“Type II” glass: it is made of de-alkalized soda lime glass. A very high chemical resistance can be reached when the surface of kind of glass is properly treated.

“Type III” glass: this is the most common type of glass, made of untreated soda-lime glass. Its main application is the production of containers for ordinary medical substances.

Depending on the chemical features of the pharmaceutical solution, it is essential to select the most appropriate type of glass. But colour is important, as well, because UV rays may damage the active ingredients: this is why amber glass bottles and containers exist.

As dark glass bottles protect wines, olive oil and other edible products, amber glass ones (such as Bormioli Rocco’s: http://www.bormioliroccopackaging.com/en/pharma/oral-for-...) are necessary to preserve drugs and other pharmaceutical products potentially damaged by photo degradation.
