Although brushing and flossing are effective at removing food particles and plaque from the smooth surfaces of our teeth, sometimes these methods cannot thoroughly clean the nooks and crannies in our premolars and molars. Because molars are the hardest teeth to clean and the ones most used in the chewing process, they are the most susceptible to cavities and decay. Molars begin to emerge when children are between the ages of 5 and 14, and sealants are necessary for protecting these teeth. Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars to prevent cavities and tooth decay. They will be applied by your dentist, who will first clean the tooth and then roughen the surface of the molar with acid. After this preparation, the dentist paints the sealant onto the molars, where it bonds into the depressions and grooves of the teeth and hardens to form a shield over the enamel. The protection offered by sealants lasts for approximately 10 years. If necessary, sealants can be reapplied to extend protection into a patient’s teenage and adult years.
