By: Startle Academy For instance, the general public has never before enjoyed a wider range of creative possibilites. The average internet user can become an on-screen star of their own making through social media, and the simplest video upload can turn a few minutes of singing into a global musical career. The internet makes it possible for anyone, anywhere to display their talents. The digital age has also given the public previously unimaginable access to education – an advance that truly is changing the world for the better. There are very few standing barriers to learning at this point, and any person with access to the internet can find courses on the subjects of their choosing. An innovative new learning platform called Startle is looking to combine these two aspects of the digital age. Led by creator and operator Camilla Carter, the site promises to offer young people a peek into the entertainment industry, as well as a possible pathway to a career within it. Startle is geared toward kids who want to “break into the biz” through a variety of talents, including dancing, singing, acting and modeling. In short, Startle is all about providing children with opportunities to learn, to create, to share, and to find their way into the entertainment industry. Carter, a performing arts coach with years of experience in the industry, says that she was inspired to create Startle after working for companies like Barbizon and John Robert Powers – companies that claimed a high cost-of-entry into the entertainment biz to the tune of $3000 or more. “The truth is you don’t have to spend that kind of money to get started,” says Carter. “I also talked to so many families craving direct, honest info and where to go instead of being scammed again and again at events that did bait and switch, tried to sell photo packages, or overly priced acting classes. I also wanted kids anywhere in the country to be able to get the professional level instruction, coaching, info, and a platform to show their work.” Startle is the offspring of that spark of inspiration, and now the site is online and operational. It's designed for young people ages 6-17, and provides an opportunity for kids and families all over the country to break into the industry with no-nonsense info, resources, and classes. Youth anywhere in the country can get exposure and get discovered via Startle’s network of industry connections.
