The Healing Waterfall Video Tells Origin Story Of Famous Guided Meditation

SANTA FE, N.M. - Feb. 28, 2016 - PRLog -- If “imitation is the greatest form of flattery”, there has been a great deal of flattery for The Healing Waterfall. That’s the name of the best selling guided meditation program authored by Max Highstein in 1985. It’s been in wide distribution ever since, reaching thousands and thousands of people, first in cassette format, then CD, and now as downloads. And there have been lots of imitations, some even shamelessly copying the name.

Highstein just released a new video on Youtube, where he explains, with a wit and humor, how the original “The Healing Waterfall” program first came to be. He voices the movie himself, with visuals of the original product, stills from the time period, as well as funny short clips and smart editing techniques.

About the narration of his guided imagery program, Highstein says, “I knew I didn’t want the voice to be a droning monotone, like most hypnosis programs”. In fact, nothing about The Healing Waterfall was like most hypnosis, guided imagery, or guided meditation programs. And it still stands apart from the vast majority of current day offerings. “I believe a good guided imagery program should engage the listener with the story. There’s no need to try to bore them into stupor with a droning voice. Our imagination works just fine to bring us into a deep state of relaxation. I prefer my programs to be enjoyable.”

So Highstein has always worked with experienced voice artists on his programs (he has authored around 100 at this point). He finds talented narrators who can deliver a reading that is quietly inviting yet colorful. Then he pairs the voice track with high quality, soft backing music that he composes himself. “There is plenty of sub-par music available if you don’t particularly care about your listener’s experience,” he says. “Good music takes time to make, and when possible I prefer to score it directly to the voice track.”

That all seems like a lot of work to go through, just for a guided imagery recording. But in the case of The Healing Waterfall, it seems to have paid off. Highstein says he’s sold over 100,000 copies, and the program won About.com’s coveted “Reader’s Choice” award for “Best Meditation Tool” – about 30 years after its first release.

"I made the video to tell the story of what went into this program. And to help insure that people find the original! There is so much content out there, I would hate to have people be disappointed by finding copycats by mistake."
