BURLINGAME, Calif. - March 9, 2016 - PRLog -- NOIT™ Research LLC, a private, leading-edge autism research group, has announced a special “Gift of Change” campaign to assist needy families in obtaining one of its special NOIT units. For every such unit sold between February 10, 2016 and March 31, 2016, the company will donate a unit to a needy family. The NOIT is an auditory stimulus that plays a key role in helping non/limited-verbal autistic individuals develop language skills.

“The NOIT is a unique learning tool that offers both children and adults the opportunity to master the art of focusing, which in turn aids in their ability to learn to talk,” commented Beth Shier, NOIT Research director. “The ‘Gift of Change’ campaign is very special to us as we enter a new year. The NOIT has proven to be very successful in improving the characteristics associated with non/limited-verbal Autism. We are pleased to make units available at no cost to deserving families that might otherwise not be able to afford one.”

The NOIT was developed by Ronald Davis, himself a former ‘Kanner’s baby’, the term used to identify autistic children before the word was coined in 1943. He would later develop the Davis Autism Approach®, a non-invasive one-on-one gentle program designed to allow autistic individuals and their families to participate more fully in life.

“In spite of the success of the autism approach, there was a sub-set of individuals with autism I could not help,” Davis said. “Those most severely affected with autism do not possess the receptive and expressive language to begin the foundational pieces of the program that lead to individuation. Those methods rely on the individual being able to follow instructions, which most cannot. So I developed a way to help them with the process, using a repetitive sound, which they listened to with a headset.

“Unfortunately, many would not tolerate a headset. I got bitten a lot in those early years of my work trying to get headsets on kids unwilling to wear them. I needed a better system.”

Davis, who has an engineering background, came up with a solution that would do the same job the headset did without being a headset. He named it NOIT. It works by way of a circuit board generating an electronic impulse and sending it to two piezo elements. The impulse stimulates the piezo elements to vibrate at a specific frequency. The vibrating piezo elements make an audible sound that is heard behind the head. A sticky gel pad attaches the unit to the person and is placed at the top of their back, between the shoulder blades.

While it does not cure autism, Davis said the NOIT supports an individual while they learn to establish a stable orientation. “It does so by putting the auditory stimulus in the exact same place at frequent intervals (every eight seconds) for long periods of time, helping the individual learn to keep their attention in one place,” he commented. “By doing so, they are able to accurately perceive the world around them from this place and are referred to as being ‘oriented’. Once there, all of their perceptions function in harmony, which in turn removes the chaos from their environment and allows them to function from a single perspective.”

The NOIT can significantly improve many behavioral characteristics common to non-verbal autism. Regarding language skills specifically, Davis said pronunciation improves, appropriate use of language increases, emergence of new language (nouns, verbs, pronouns in that order; speaking about things happening in their environment at the time) takes place, and if echolalia (repetition of another person's words or phrases) existed, it decreases.
“The NOIT is the culmination of my life’s work,” Davis stated. “I am thrilled that through ‘The Gift of Change’ program we will be able to get it to many more children and adults who need it.”

There are currently over 225 NOIT units in use internationally. Although originally created for non-verbal individuals with autism, the NOIT is also useful for anyone who wishes to learn to focus and attend in any situation. Individuals with ADHD, Asperger’s, dyslexia, and PDD-NOS also have found the NOIT very useful.

About NOIT Research LLC
NOIT Research is a private, leading-edge autism organization. Its purpose is the development of strategies that will support even the most severely autistic individuals to learn to participate fully in life.

A small percentage of the autistic population, possibly 10 to 15%, are so severely handicapped with Autism that the development of language skills does not occur. The failure to develop language is a good indication of just how severely they are affected. Along with the failure to develop language, many of these individuals are also severely limited in the areas of self-care, social and emotional function, and focus and attention. Almost all exhibit ritualistic or repetitive behaviors (often called stims) or engage in self-injury. This limited population of autistic individuals is the focus of NOIT Research.

The company is headquartered in Burlingame, CA. For more information, visit www.noitresearch.org.

About the NOIT Unit
The purpose of the NOIT unit is to support an individual with autism who lacks the receptive language skills needed to follow verbal instructions to learn how to be in a state of orientation with his or her senses working in harmony.

The NOIT is available through licensed Davis® Autism Approach facilitators. For more information on how an individual can benefit from the NOIT, please visit www.noitresearch.org or www.davisautism.com.
