Spring Allergies and Sinus Infections

Sinus Infection - Acute sinusitis and Chronic sinusitis

A bad cold is often mistaken for sinusitis. Many symptoms are the same, including headache, runny nose and nasal congestion. Acute sinusitis can be triggered by a cold or allergies and usually lasts three to eight weeks. A sinus infection lasting longer than eight weeks is considered chronic sinusitis and is often caused by a bacterial infection.

Sinus Infection symptoms include headache, tenderness of the face, runny nose, pain in the teeth, and nasal congestion. Unlike a cold, sinusitis symptoms may be caused by bacterial infections and often require antibiotics.

Sinus Infection Treatment

Acute sinusitis usually doesn't require treatment beyond relieving the symptoms with nasal decongestants, saline rinses, and pain medications. Chronic sinusitis may require antibiotics. By stopping a sinus infection early, you avoid later symptoms and possible complications.
