New Florida Literary Journal Seeks Submissions

SAFETY HARBOR, Fla. - March 28, 2016 - PRLog -- ​​Odet is a new journal dedicated to the written and visual arts of the Tampa Bay Area, highlighting fiction, poetry, essays/memoirs, and black and white artwork or photography that somehow reflect Safety Harbor or unique Florida customs, cultures, or people. Submissions are accepted through June 15, 2016. The initial publication is scheduled for the first quarter of 2017 in celebration of the centennial of the incorporation of the city of Safety Harbor, a regional center of the arts nestled in the heart of bustling Pinellas County.

Odet is named for early settler and citrus pioneer Odet Philippe. According to A Brief History of Safety Harbor, Florida, Philippe is said to have claimed to be a nephew of King Louis XVI of France and childhood friend of Napoleon Bonaparte, and survived a number of escapades involving pirates off the Florida coast.  According to Warren Firschein, managing editor of Odet and co-author of A Brief History of Safety Harbor, Florida, these tales are likely fantasy. "We wanted to celebrate Philippe's status as the region's first known storyteller by naming the journal after him," says Firschein. "In a sense, he was the genesis of the rich artistic community and imagination that now exists in Safety Harbor."

"We are looking for submissions that hook us, inspire or surprise us in ways no one has before," says editor-in-chief Laura Kepner. "Your art, stories or poems can be about a day at the beach; something that occurs at an orange grove; Florida before air conditioning. Above all else, be creative."

There is no entry fee and accepted written works will be automatically considered for a simultaneous contest facilitated by Safety Harbor Writers & Poets with a cash prize for first and second place winners in both prose and poetry.
