Kazan Federal University works on catalysts for silicone rubber production

KAZAN, Russian Federation - April 4, 2016 - PRLog -- The project is funded equally by the Russian Government and Kazan Synthetic Rubber Plant - each side invests 130 million rubles.

The full name of this particular research is «Import Substituting Technology of Catalyst Production Based on Pt (0) for Hot Solidifying Silicone Rubber Mixtures and Liquid Silicone Rubbers». It is realized by the Homogeneous Catalysis Lab at the Department of Physical Chemistry and helmed by DSci, Professor Dmitry Yakhvarov.

Currently the world leaders in silicone production are Dow Corning and Wacker-Chemie. Up-and-coming Chinese producers also actively pursue top positions.

Thanks to this research at KFU Russia will soon be able to have its own silicone for the needs of oil industry, chemical and aviation plants.

PhD candidate Yury Kislitsyn talks about the work, "We know have first results - successful silicone rubber production tests based on Russian raw materials in our lab. It's important that silicone rubber is harmless for humans. Silicone oils are used as components in some medications and foods. Silicone is also a great material for any end products - simple hot pressing is enough. The technology is both eco-friendly and economical".
