Herbal Professionals and Entrepreneurs Vital to Continued Revival of Herbalism BOSTON - After a brief time where it was all but forgotten in America, herbalism has once again found a place in many homes thanks to the revival that began in the 1970s and continues strongly into the present. This renaissance and renewed interest in the healing arts of the past makes this a vibrant, exciting time to be an herbalist. There is a growing community of home and family herbalists, a growing network of herbal gatherings, and a growing interest from people reaching out with questions about how to use herbs to support their health. Within these communities are the individuals that are the soul and spirit of herbalism. Although much is shared and celebrated collectively, each person is on his or her own path, and among these individuals are some who will find such a passionate love for herbalism that they are inspired to become the next teachers, healers, and herbal entrepreneurs. They are visionaries! These visionaries see potential and possibility wherever they look. These herbalists go on to become leaders, healers, business owners, farmers, and writers - they have found their own way in the wide, wild herbal world by following an internal compass and working long and hard to educate themselves about the science and art of herbalism. To inspire and encourage these emerging visionaries, the Herbal Academy has opened enrollment for two new online herbal learning programs. Bringing vision into reality can be a long and difficult process, but it becomes easier when there is a framework of reference, a base of collective knowledge, and experiences from which to draw. The Herbal Academy has worked diligently to bring together many current visionaries and professionals of the herbal community. The Academy works with seasoned herbalists such as Matthew Wood, Anne McIntyre, Bevin Clare, Steven Foster, and Pamela Spence, a bevy of clinical herbalists and folk herbalists, and medical professionals to create curriculum that is rooted in the wisdom of folk and global healing traditions, modern herbal practice, and science. By sharing perspectives, wisdom, and knowledge, these herbalists have collaborated to help the Herbal Academy create educational opportunities unlike any others in their diversity, depth, and ability to prepare students for a professional career in herbalism. The Advanced Herbal Course is a challenging course of study for the student wishing to become a professional herbal practitioner. Health and phytotherapy topics are discussed in depth along with the business knowledge needed to run a client-based herbal business. Students develop and prepare a thesis project in an area of interest as they progress through the course, and completion of the Advanced Herbal Course fulfills learning-hour requirements needed for professional membership in the American Herbalist Guild. An off-shoot from the Advanced Herbal Course, the Entrepreneur Herbal Course helps equip the student whose main interest is opening a products-based business or other herbal venture. There are many legal considerations specific to the small herbal business, including what types of claims may be used to market dietary supplements, how to stay in compliance with federally mandated Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and how to fulfill labeling requirements - all are addressed in the Entrepreneur Herbal Course. The student is also guided through the process of developing a business plan, learning formulation skills for herbal products, and an in-depth look at herbal history and traditions from around the world. About the Herbal Academy The Herbal Academy provides education that inspires students to investigate the full depth and breadth of herbal knowledge. With roots as the Herbal Academy of New England, offering local classes in Boston, MA, the school became the Herbal Academy as their online programs grew and they began enrolling students from around the globe. With current and past students from the United States, Canada, Asia, South America, Europe, Africa, and Australia, the Herbal Academy has truly become an international school of herbal arts and sciences.
