By: Paul Boardman The history of Topsail Island, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, stretches back to the 1700's and the final days of swashbuckling piracy. Thought to be the resting ground of Blackbeard's lost treasure it was the site of an extensive, well funded, treasure hunt at the tail end of the Dirty Thirties. The location provides a perfect setting for a novel that brings the infamous pirate back as a key player in an outrageous real estate marketing scheme during the economic crash of 2008. The Outer Banks of North Carolina In the early 1700's, the infamous pirate Blackbeard plied his trade from the Caribbean, up the coast of America and finally dying in a fierce battle a hundred miles north of Topsail Island. By then, the island had already earned its name from the topsails of pirate ships that rose above the pine forests as pirates awaited their prey. Two centuries later, in the Dirty Thirties, a serious, properly organized treasure hunting expedition was launched on this desolate strip of sand whose forests had been stripped away years before. Two years after its beginning, the hunt suddenly ended without explanation. Its final outcome has never been revealed. During WWII, the island became a military base for testing rockets but soon proved too short and was sold off to the public in the Seventies. It slowly became a tourist destination. Nearing the end of the real estate boom at the turn of the millennium a young real estate developer began a subdivision adjacent to the site of the 1930's expedition but like the rest of the country, was caught in the nation-wide collapse of 2008. On the verge of bankruptcy, the young entrepreneur devised an incredibly wild marketing plan, based loosely on Blackbeard's treasure that he hoped would save his business despite the failing economy. Even the best plans sometimes go awry. 'Topsail Island' is the third novel by Paul Boardman, a Canadian who prefers sailing the warmer climes of the Southern United States and the Caribbean to suffering the wicked winters where he was born. With a background in real estate development and finance he provides an insightful account of the pitfalls and adventure of real estate development, combining it with interesting characters, intrigue and humor. 'Topsail Island' is a must-read for anyone involved with real estate and the pitfalls of fine print or anyone intrigued by outlandish "Outside the Box" marketing. Of course, let's not forget anyone who yearns for a good story, well told. 'Topsail Island', published in e-book format by eBookIt.com, is available through several online retailers including Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Apple's iBookstore. https://www.ebookit.com/ Author Paul Boardman is available for interviews.
