DEHRADUN, India - July 5, 2016 - PRLog -- University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Asia's first core sector University, today conferred degrees to 1854 students from 53 different programmes during its 14th annual convocation. The ceremony was held at University's Bidholi, Dehradun campus and was presided over by Honourable Dr. K K Paul, Governor, Uttarakhand, who also delivered the convocation address. Shri KD Tripathi, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas was the Chief Guest of the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri KD Tripathi said, 'Skill India initiative of Government of India is an ambitious programme to connect government bodies, academia and industries to prepare a roadmap for the development of the nation. UPES plays an important role in providing skilled manpower so that they can bring a change. All core sectors of India await young minds. In this world of disruptive technologies, it is important to upgrade your knowledge and skills continuously to stay relevant. Each student is a branch of his/her university and therefore must foster a culture of teaching and learning wherever they go.'

Dr. K K Paul said, 'The quality of education provided by UPES and the University's contribution in the development of the people of Uttarakhand is praise worthy. It is due to institutions like UPES that Dehradun is now known as one of the educational hubs of India. The state needs more such educational institutions to conduct research and development programs and create healthy academic-industry interface that is ultimately beneficial to the society at large.'

6 students were awarded University Gold Medal, 47 students received Silver Medal, 3 students received Institutional Medals and 5 Students were awarded medals in the Executive Program Category. Sanchay Mukherjee was awarded Siddhu Mal & Sons Gold Medal for Best Corporate Student 2016, Bhavesh Gupta was awarded Narayan Sahai Gold Medal for Outstanding Post Graduation Student of Oil & Gas Sector 2016 and Anupreethi B was awarded I.N. Mehta Gold Medal for Outstanding Post Graduate Student of College of Engineering Studies 2016.

Mr. Utpal Ghosh, CEO & President, UPES congratulated award winners and new graduates and encouraged them to pursue excellence in their chosen fields. He also emphasised on the need for academic research in educational institutes.

"Congratulations to all the graduating students. In true UPES tradition most of them have found jobs or are going for higher studies. I am sure they will carry the strong UPES culture of learning and skill building in their professional careers. Quality of teaching, learning in a University is strongly linked with the research & development work it carries out. Therefore, at UPES our objective is to develop and support a confident, skilled academic research community", said Utpal Ghosh.

UPES has conducted several research programmes in varied fields including solar thermal energy, biofuel, waste to energy, clean combustion engines and renewable energy supply chain.

Academic year 2015-16 was a significant year for UPES. The University raised benchmark for quality education by achieving momentous milestones, including:

·  - In the academic year 2015-16, UPES launched 12newprograms that include multi-disciplinary programs like B.Plan, B.FA, B.A Public Policy- with embedded civil services test preparation and M.Plan

·  - To promote the spirit of research amongst students, Research Initiative for Students of Engineering (RISE) was launched by the College of Engineering Studies, UPES with a corpus of INR 15,00,000

·    - With the objective of producing industry ready professionals, UPES tied up with industry as part of its academia-industry linkage. The University signed various MoUs and academic collaborations with leading organizations like IBM, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Philips Carbon Black Ltd., and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd.

·    - UPES students won major Indian and international competitions like Lockheed Martin Roll On/Roll Off Mission Systems Design Challenge and CanSat Competition 2016, USA

·    - UPES implemented 31 funded projects of worth INR. 27 crores in Energy and Environment sector
