| You CAN Teach An Old Biker New TricksABATE of Wisconsin, Inc. Board Members take Advanced Riders Course
By: ABATE of Wisconsin, Inc. The course consists of three hours of classroom study covering risk management, rider awareness, rider impairment, traffic management, perception and observation, and traction management. A written test is also included. The riding portion of the class is five hours of advanced cornering, braking skills, swerving to avoid obstacles, tight slow speed handling, and combinations of curves. A pre-qualification exercise determines whether the rider has enough of the basic skills to continue in this advanced course or should be placed in the Basic Rider Course. The BRC2 also involves a riding evaluation at the end. To date, Wisconsin has 34 motorcycle fatalities. Though not all of the crashes could have been avoided, some riders would still be alive today if they practiced proper riding techniques. A large percentage of motorcycle fatalities are single vehicle crashes. These riders either failed to use proper techniques or simply did not have the skill to avoid crashing. The BRC2 can teach you the skills necessary to avoid such crashes. Even the most experienced rider has something to learn or at least be reminded of. The ABATE of Wisconsin Inc. Board members and officers that took part in the class have an average of 30 years' experience each on two wheels and all will tell you they learned a few new riding techniques and appreciate the many riding reminders they may have forgotten over the years. ALL riders, no matter how experienced, are encouraged to attend the BRC2 course to improve basic-rider skills and crash-avoidance techniques that are usually either absent or under-utilized in crash-involved riders. The rider will also improve overall control and increase self-confidence and traffic awareness and learn to deal with any unexpected situation when riding. ABATE (A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments) is a bi-partisan grass roots organization with a goal to give the motorcyclists of Wisconsin a strong, united voice with regard to their future, their way of life, their safety and their legal rights as motorcyclists and citizens.
