BOSTON - July 24, 2016 - PRLog -- Flutist Peter H. Bloom, who performs across the globe and serves as historical woodwind consultant to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, will give a lecture-recital on the early saxophone at the Museum on August 1 at 11:00 am (Musical Instrument Gallery, free with museum admission, limited seating). He will discuss the invention of the saxophone in the 1840s; will perform on early saxophones by Adolphe Sax; will show the MFA's alto instrument by Sax, one of the oldest known examples.

In August, Peter H. Bloom will be on tour with the Modernistics in up-tempo shows of Great American Songbook favorites and the best of bebop:  at the Medallion Opera House Gorham NH (August 4 at 7:00 pm); at the Tillotson Center Colebrook NH, presented by the Great North Woods Committee for the Arts (August 5 at 7:00 pm); and at the West Claremont (NH) Center for the Arts on August 6 at 7:00 pm.

The Modernistics are Peter H. Bloom, flute; Mark Leighton, guitar; Ted Powers, guitar, ukulele, vocals and tap; Pamela Powers, vocals and tap.  The group performs an exhilarating mix including Blue Skies, Let's Fall in Love, Top Hat, Sunny Side of the Street, Fly Me to the Moon, and the Ellington hit tune It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing, plus great bebop numbers like My Little Suede Shoes by Charlie Parker, Webb City by Bud Powell, and Tiny Capers by Clifford Brown.

In September, Peter H. Bloom will join the renowned mezzo-soprano D'Anna Fortunato with Thomas Hill, clarinet and Mary Jane Rupert, piano, to perform Music by Maine Composers at U Maine Orono (September 23, 2016 at 7:30 pm, Minsky Recital Hall) and U Maine Augusta (September 24, 2016 at 3:00 pm, Fine Arts Building, Room 124, at 46 University Dr, Augusta, ME 04330).  The concert will celebrate renowned composer Elliott Schwartz in his 80th year, and will feature the premiere of a new piece by Beth Wiemann, written for the occasion, plus works by other noted Maine composers Richard Nelson, Michael Viens, and Elizabeth Vercoe.

On September 29 at 8:00 pm, The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra will open its 44th season at Scullers Jazz Club Boston, with a high-energy show including Mark Harvey's Spaceways (for Sun Ra) and Saxophrenia (written for the MIT Festival Jazz Ensemble and saxophone legend Joe Lovano).  Both of the pieces are from Aardvark's new CD Passages (Leo Records).  Also on tap:  the world premiere of a Mark Harvey's Northeast Express, plus the Duke Ellington-Juan Tizol classic Caravan and the Ellington-Johnny Hodges ballad Jeep's Blues, in honor of Cambridge-Boston native Hodges on the 110th anniversary of his birth.

Peter H. Bloom has performed as flutist/saxophonist for almost 4 decades with the legendary Aardvark Jazz Orchestra (Mark Harvey, founder and music director).  Bloom concertizes internationally performing on flute, alto flute, bass flute and piccolo, with tours in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.  He appears on 40 recordings (Leo Records, 9Winds, Sony Classical, Dorian, other labels).  He has given workshops, master classes and lecture-demos across the globe and serves as historical woodwind consultant to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, where he lectures and performs regularly. He is a faculty member of the Snow Pond Composers Workshop; serves as contributing editor for Noteworthy Sheet Music; and is a winner of the American Musicological Society's Noah Greenberg Award.   His career encompasses exploratory jazz, new and improvised music, jazz standards, blues, bebop, and diverse chamber music from the Renaissance to the 21st century.    The Boston Globe called his playing "a revelation for unforced sweetness and strength," while Jazz Improv hailed his "exquisite melody…the improvisations growing organically out of the theme" and ArtsFuse wrote, "His solos on flute and amplified flute are always highlights of a performance."
