US Marine Corps Tun Tavern Alumni Challenge Coin

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - Oct. 14, 2016 - PRLog -- The Birthplace of the US Marine Corps was Tun Tavern Philadelphia, 1775.  Tun Tavern was a popular tavern during colonial times.  People such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklinfrequented Tun Tavern.  The tavern was established as far back as 1685.

On November 10th, 1775, Continental Congress saw fit to raise two battalions of Marines.  The search for new Marine recruits was on.  Tun Tavern was a natural selection for the Marine Corps recruiting efforts.  With the promise of a cold beer and adventure, many citizens signed up to become one of the few!  The new recruits were placed under the charge of Captain Samuel Nicholas, who was also the first Commandant of the Marine Corps!
