First introduced in 1997, Invisalign clear plastic aligners work on the same principle as traditional braces: they cause teeth to shift slowly by being worn almost constantly. But Invisalign is removable and much less prone to causing injuries than braces, and like traditional retainers, is made from a mold of the patients' mouth. Unlike retainers, Invisalign is slightly shifted from the real tooth pattern, so that as patients replace their aligner about once every two weeks, their teeth will gradually be pushed into place. They also require the insertion of brackets on the molars–a very painful process—and the wire can accidentally be left too long, causing it to gouge the cheek. Braces also can be uncomfortable even at the best of times, and on an adult, are often said to look juvenile.

Invisalign has none of those drawbacks: it's a simple plastic arch and is clear. And while teeth veneers need to be replaced every few years, Invisalign treatments are usually followed with up by the issuing of a retainer, which helps preserve its realignment permanently.
