Less painful and time-consuming than traditional metal braces, Invisalign is a cosmetically pleasing alternative available for adults and teens.

First, put on the market in 1997, Invisalign is a brand product which is used to realign teeth. After taking a mold of the patient's mouth, the dentist uses Invisalign's software to map out a treatment plan.  Based on consultation, a series of unique clear, plastic, arch-shaped braces will be manufactured, each with slightly shifted teeth positions, which patients will wear in a series. Patients will change braces about every two weeks, in typical cases, and will check in with the dentist about every six weeks to ensure that everything is going to plan.

Invisalign has several major advantages over metal braces. Not only do traditional braces require onerous monthly appointments with an orthodontist for tightening, the tightening itself is often painful and presents more opportunities for medical errors. Invisalign also spares the patient from needing brackets placed on their molars, and because Invisalign braces can be removed easily, there is less chance of injury to the patient in the event of breakage.

Breakage, however, should be rare, because, like traditional retainers, Invisalign is meant to be removed during eating and physical activities. Patients will still be able to remove their braces in order to brush and floss their teeth normally also significantly reduces the chance of developing plaque and periodontal disease. Traditional braces, by contrast, make teeth notoriously difficult to clean, especially for young patients. Of course, traditional braces are also associated with teenagers, but both teen and adult patients often find invisible braces less stigmatizing.

This ensures that the teeth remain permanently in their new position, and can also be supplied by Invisalign.
