They may also think of cosmetic procedures, such as bonding, or bleaching. While Dr. Christopher Emuedue is proud to offer all of these to his patients, another surgical procedure which may not fit in with patients' preconceived notions of dentistry is the frenectomy. This removal of a small bit of connective tissue usually targets a body part that is healthy but causing other problems. It is easy to do and requires little of the patient. A frenulum is the tissue which connects the lips and cheeks to the jaw. The upper one is called a maxillary frenulum and is the main focus of this discussion. A frenulum which is too thick could contribute to tartar build up by making the teeth more difficult to clean. But the more common reasons for removing it are that it is interfering with speech, is preventing a baby from suckling, or that it is causing the teeth to come in at the wrong angles, or with the wrong spacing. In fact, an overly wide frenulum is one of the most likely culprits for gap teeth. A frenectomy is the removal of the frenum. Depending on the case, a dentist may also decide to move or reduce it. The frenectomy can be done with just a few cuts of the scalpel, in which case it is expected to heal easily and quickly. However, an even more patient-friendly procedure involves the use of a cutting laser. While older lasers risked causing heat damage during long surgeries (which the frenectomy isn't), newer models give off little heat and use water to excite the molecules in the area being cut, lowering resistance. Dr. Emuedue can discuss the specifics of his tools with you prior to the operation, but there is little risk to the patient regardless. The main advantage of lasers is that they cause less bleeding. Closing the wound takes only a few stitches, and requires about a week. Patients may be glad to know that anti-inflammatories are usually sufficient to manage any resultant pain—this isn't the kind of procedure which requires opioids. The surgery is simple enough to do in Dr. Emuedue's Greenville office, and in teenagers or older children, can be done using local anesthesia. It is just one of many services Dr. Emuedue offers as part of his family-oriented practice. Christopher Emuedue, DMD, operates the Greenville Family & Cosmetic Dentistry at 7215 I-30, Suite B, Greenville, Texas, 75402.
