But to wear dentures, all the teeth in a jaw have to be removed, and this sometimes required the extraction of teeth that were still healthy. Since then, dentistry has made great advancements, and while dentures are sometimes the best option for patients, Dr. Scott Seier of Advantage Dentistry offers endosteal implants. Essentially the construction of a fake tooth, the surgical procedure to install implants rebuilds individual teeth from the root up. Tooth loss doesn't just look bad or prevent a patient from chewing or speaking properly. It also causes the arch of the rest of the teeth to shift and can cause nearby parts of the jawbone to weaken or dissolve. If the tooth was lost to periodontal disease, the same decay may have harmed the jaw, but a large amount of jawbone tissue is required for an implant. In extreme cases, Dr. Seier may decide a bone graft is necessary. Once there is sufficient healthy bone tissue, an anchor will be surgically implanted to form the base of the new tooth. These anchors are usually titanium screws, which fuse with the jawbone over a period of a few months while the patient wears a temporary crown. Following the attachment of an abutment to the top of the anchor during a later visit, Dr. Seier or Dr. Balcerak will make a mold of the patient's mouth and send it to a lab for the construction of the permanent crown. The crown may be made of gold, porcelain, or plastic and glass resin; there are advantages and disadvantages to each which the doctors can discuss. Regardless of its material, the permanent crown will need to be cared for like any other tooth. Though nobody likes surgery, the pill-based oral conscious sedation method Dr. Seier utilizes can spare patients a great deal of suffering during placement of the implant. During placement of the crown, only local numbing is generally necessary. Dental implant surgery has a very high success rate, and when suitable, is one of the most effective ways to repair long-term damage to the mouth.
