Ultrasound Therapy Treats Variety of Ailments at Carolina Chiropractic Center

Ultrasounds have so many purported medicinal uses that people can often find it confusing to keep track of what they actually do. In fact, the energy pulses from these devices are approved for a number of purposes by the FDA, but information about them is hard to collect because the field is growing so rapidly. At the Carolina Chiropractic Center, Dr. James Huggins uses the latest knowledge of ultrasound applications to treat soft tissue problems, particularly joint and muscle stiffness.

Ultrasonic applications work by using a vibrating crystal to convert mechanical energy into sound waves. The absorption of energy waves in deep tissue produces heat, which physical therapists have traditionally hastened healing by increasing blood flow. Today, we also know that electrically-induced heat can break down solids. Physical therapists exploit this method to dissolve scar tissue and to deliver medications directly into the skin, without the use of needles.

Ultrasonic heat has shown some promise for treating a variety of cancers, and in July of 2016, the FDA approved ultrasonic ablation to treat nervous tremors, when coupled with an MRI scanner. The FDA has also issued guidelines for ultrasonic devices used in fat reduction. However, the most common use of ultrasound therapy, and the kind used at the Carolina Chiropractic Center is to reduce the inflammation of soft tissues. To ensure as little energy is wasted as possible, the sound wave producing wand is run over a portion of the patient's body that has been covered in gel, or underwater. It is run over for just three to five minutes, except when being used to dissolve scar tissue, and is kept in constant motion to prevent burns.

Decreasing inflammation can be helpful in preventing scarring, and one of the medications most frequently administered through ultrasounds is cortisone, an inflammation-reducing hormone. Ultrasound therapy isn't meant to be used alone but is one of many methods used at the Carolina Chiropractic Center as part of recovery programs and to reduce feelings of tension in sports medicine.
