Dental implants and crown replacements are among the most important restorative procedures dentists perform, but they require patients to already have a large amount of stable bone material in their jaws. Aside from cases of missing or broken teeth caused by injury, this bone material is often absent for the same reason that caused the need for implants or new crowns in the first place. There are a number of materials which can be used to rebuild jaws, but the most common is bone from another part of the patient's body. Usually, this means the chin or another part of the mouth where dentists normally drill. After an incision is made, a suction device can be used to extract the bone fragment. The fragment is then inserted into the site of the jaw where the tooth restoration is supposed to take place. The doctor will also use surgical films and sutures to ensure that the donation site heals properly.

Depending on the size of the transfer, it could take several months for the grafted bone to fuse to its new location. After this is done, the doctors will be able to proceed with the drilling and insertions required for implants. In cases where self-donation is not recommended, it is possible to use bone fragments collected from a cadaver, or from the hip bones of donors.
