Follow on Google News | Osseous Grafts Prepare Patients for ProsthodonticsBy: Baystone Media (512) 451-7491 www.fredrickshawdds.com Osseous Grafts Prepare Patients for Prosthodontics At the Shoal Creek Prosthodontic Group, Frederic Shaw, DDS, has devoted his career to fabricating artificial teeth for his patients. These can range from crown to dentures, but dental implants are the most popular and commonly-needed procedure dentists who specialize in tooth restorations offer. However, the implantation of a titanium rod into the jawbone requires a large amount of healthy jaw tissue, which has often been lost to the very same periodontitis which destroyed the tooth being replaced. Furthermore, when a tooth is lost, it sets off a negative feedback loop in which the jawbone continues to deteriorate, weakening the other teeth. In those cases, Dr. Shaw and his staff are prepared to carry out an osseous graft, possibly in conjugation with guided tissue regeneration, to rebuild the jawbone. In many cases, the donor tissue will be from another part of the patient's mouth or the chin. After an incision is made, a suction device can be used to extract the bone fragment. The fragment will be inserted near the intended site of the implant and may be separated from the gum with a film. This is because different tissues heal and grow at different rates, and gum tissue must be prevented from growing into the osseous cavity. All wounds will be sutured. It will likely be four to nine months before the bones have fused together and the implant surgery can take place. If for some reason Dr. Shaw objects to creating two oral surgical sites, there are a number of alternatives. Synthetic and cadaver jaw material are supplied by reputable labs, and hipbone fragments from living donors can be used as a substitute. (Self-hipbone donation cannot be done in a dental office.) There's no avoiding that bone grafts have one of the longest recovery periods of any dental procedure, but there are few dentists better equipped than Dr. Shaw to carry them out. Both grafts and implants have a high rate of success and are widely considered to be the most reliable, and ultimately satisfactory, way to restore individual teeth.
