Essentially the construction of an artificial tooth, implants are, for many patients, preferable to dentures, which require the removal of functional teeth. However, receiving implants can be a complex process. At Bayberry Dental Care, Kathleen Falsey, DDS, consults closely with surgeons all through the process of inserting implants and helps patients maintain and restore their new teeth for years afterward. When a tooth has been lost to injury or periodontal disease, replacing it can be essential to preserving the shape of the mouth and the jawbone, as well as restoring the patient's ability to bite and speak. Sometimes, however, the jawbone has already been damaged, and because endosteal implants are inserted into the jawbone, a tissue transfer may be necessary. Either way, once there is sufficient jawbone, a titanium implant is inserted into the jaw, and the bone grows to anchor it in. During the weeks this process takes to complete, and abutment with a temporary crown will be placed on top of the rod. Once the implant is securely in place, a permanent artificial tooth, called a crown, will be screwed to the abutment. (Crowns can be made of several materials, including gold, ceramic, and plastic. Dr. Falsey will take a mold of your teeth in order to manufacture a crown that will fit your mouth.) After this, a crown will need to be cared for as if it were a regular tooth. Local anesthesia is usually all that is necessary for the placement of the implant, and during the appointment to place the crown, no anesthetic is necessary. Dental implants have a very low failure rate, and mostly occur in patients who smoke or experienced a problem while their implant was being inserted in the first place. Dr. Falsey, however, is experienced in restoring implants and can guide patients through the entire process of caring for their new teeth once the titanium rod is in place. Implants are only one restorative option, with bridges and dentures being other well-known alternatives. However, for preventing further damage to the shape of the jaw, and by extension, other teeth, nothing beats implants.
