"Two years ago, I did not know who the Sisters were," says Jacks. "I was invited to work on Project Nunway in San Francisco and I was amazed by this group of people and the work they do. After volunteering for a few other things and attending their grant giving event; I was hooked and this idea began to brew." The Sisters are a leading order of queer nuns who began in San Francisco in 1979 and have become an international activist and charity organization. They continue to devote their lives to community service, human rights, and society outreach. Jacks' believes they are an integral part of the ever changing fabric that is the culture of San Francisco and the world. "I began this project nearly two years ago; interviewing, researching, and capturing photos. I have interviewed the remaining founders, some original Sisters and last summer, I went to Nashville to connect with the first Fully Professed African-American Sister. We have over 7000 photos and 30 hours of audio so far! In April, I am bringing one of the founding Sisters to San Francisco from New Orleans, and we will shoot the cover of the book, which is why I created this Indiegogo campaign" Proceeds from the Indiegogo campaign will cover production costs including; rental of a cable car, taxes, usage fees, insurance, permits, photography, editing, craft services and associated costs. In addition to creating an oversized collector's edition art-style book, Jacks' project will also include stories from people within the community who have been positively impacted by the Sisters throughout the years. "I was sitting in Café Flore one day, and a person I had never met came over to my table, and told me they had heard about the project. They wanted to share a story; that story began with the words, "I would not be alive today, if it weren't for the Sisters." Right then, I knew there would be many such stories like this in the community, and I wanted to hear them. For me, this project has become a 'love letter' to San Francisco, if you will." Indiegogo supporters can choose from an array of awards including, behind the-scenes shout outs, signed photos, seats on the cable car during the shoot and more. 20% of net proceeds from this project will be donated to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence General Fund; which provides grants to under-funded, small organizations and projects providing direct services to underserved communities.
