Follow on Google News | Baltimore's Independent Musical Core Spotlighted in "Charm City Sounds" Curated by Matt Talley"Charm City Sounds" Playlist on Spotify Shows What Locals Already Know: Baltimore Has a Happening Music Scene
By: Montauk Music One of these musicians is alt-rocker Matt Talley. As he spent time earning his credibility playing in and around Baltimore, he noticed a wealth of musical talent, but few seemed to be finding their way out of the local bubble (http://data.baltimoresun.com/ Talley offered his reasoning and insight behind "Charm City Sounds" playlist. "I created the playlist for a few reasons. As a musician, there's nothing cooler than playing a show and looking out at the crowd and noticing someone singing along. The words to a song that you've written is bringing them joy or making them feel something. There's this instant bond, a connection that every artist should be able to experience at some point. The biggest hurdle is that most people simply don't know the songs. I wanted a quick resource that anybody could hit up that let them check out some of the local talent that's killing it. "The second reason I created the playlist is that there are so many bands killing it right now. They deserve so much attention and praise. I'm in the process of recording my second album and honestly, talking about and promoting yourself can be exhausting, but when someone else is talking about and promoting you, it feels good. Having someone take notice of your art makes what you're doing feel worthwhile. The acts in the Baltimore music scene deserve to be talked about because what they're doing is fantastic. "My final reason for doing it is probably the most selfish. I was recently talking with a group of people and somebody asked me why there aren't very many acts that have come out of Baltimore lately. Although I can think of plenty of artists who are doing great work, they seem to have flown under the radar of others and that just doesn't sit well with me. Baltimore makes headlines for a lot of things. Often the negative drowns out the positive. There's got to be a turning point with that, so why not start with music? I want people to see whats going on here, because when the Baltimore music scene succeeds, we all succeed."
