Nokomis Awarded Grant from National Institutes of Health (NIH)

PITTSBURGH - March 16, 2018 - PRLog -- Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting healthcare institutions. Innovative solutions to combat the threat are needed by medical device manufactures, hospitals, and government agencies. Nokomis has received a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the amount of $149,782.  The NIH SBIR grant will repurpose Nokomis' Hiawatha Radio Frequency (RF) sensor to detect cyber-attacks on networked medical devices and to prevent disruptions to critical healthcare infrastructure.
Cyber-attacks have closed several hospitals and health care centers in United States, United Kingdom, Spain, and France. These attacks have delayed surgical operations, required redirecting of new patients to other facilities, and prevented access to medical data. In 2017 Health and Human Services declared that the state of healthcare cybersecurity is in critical condition.
