By: Addiction Now The primary drug of choice in San Diego County for addiction treatment patients has been heroin but local authorities have found that the synthetic opioid fentanyl has also been a prominent substance in the area. Fentanyl can be 50 times more potent than heroin and has been found mixed with heroin and other street drugs.Yet, thousands of counterfeit prescription pills containing fentanyl were found by law enforcement officials. Prescription drug abuse is now the main cause of mortality in San Diego. The data influenced the San Diego County Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force to come to life. The force looks to reduce improper use and access to all types of prescribed medications. Last year, the task force released a list of details about criminal cases and prosecutions associated with prescribed medications. The publication showed that in the past five years the city saw a fourfold increase in robberies related to prescriptions. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) division in San Diego has also been working to curb drug abuse and leading events such as the Prescription Drug Take-Back Day in several locations throughout the city. The last event was organized by the DEA together with numerous law enforcement agencies and was held in 41 separate locations.
