Follow on Google News | Adelphi Names Outstanding First-Year Student for 2017-18A member of Adelphi's First-Year Living-Learning Community, Carissa has excelled as a physics major during her time at Adelphi. She hopes to become a physics teacher and supports this goal through her studies, as social media coordinator on the Physics Club's executive board -- where she created the club's first Twitter account -- and as a member of the Future Teachers Association Club. Carissa also plays flute and piccolo in the Adelphi band and enjoys her part-time campus work as a theater technician. She is a graduate of MacArthur High School in Levittown. Each spring, Adelphi's First-Year Experience Committee sponsors the Outstanding First-Year Student Award, which honors a student who has shown exceptional academic achievement, campus and/or community involvement and leadership strength. Carissa is one of more than 1,100 first-year students in the Class of 2021. MacKenzie Banks, a political science major from Lubbock, Texas, received Honorable Mention honors. She is involved in the Gender and Sexuality Alliance and Black Students United groups on campus, and also is an e-board member on the Eddy Hall Council and the Resident Student Association. On hall council, she holds the role of public relations officer. Banks is a graduate of Lubbock High School.
