Follow on Google News | ![]() New ASC Serves Pacific Northwest Demand for Lower Cost, Higher Quality Total Joint Replacement"OSI is the center of the future to accommodate the unique requirements of complex ortho and spine cases," says Regent CEO Chris Bishop. "The move of higher acuity cases to outpatient centers is transforming surgical best practice and Regent is leveraging this expertise to assist our 19 hospital joint ventures and 23 U.S. surgery centers to adapt and thrive." "One of the most exciting aspects of this project is the opportunity to transition more acute orthopedic and spine cases out of hospital setting and into the outpatient arena," says Regent VP of Operations Anne Roberts. "We're working with physicians for whom this has been a long-time dream, and this facility is truly on the forefront for performing complex, total joint replacement procedures in an ASC setting. We're creating a care model for patients that is superb -- from pre-admission and surgery, through recovery and tracking outcomes. The goal is higher quality, more affordable care for the patients." Dr. Alex Ching is among the physician partners at OSI and president of its Board of Directors. "We have a unique group of surgeons at OSI. Within orthopedic surgery and spine surgery and interventional pain procedures, we have multiple sub-specialties represented. Our physicians are diverse, but with a high degree of technical expertise," says Dr. Ching. "And because we have been working together for several years to create this center, we have been able to coalesce around a shared vision of clinical excellence combined with a great patient experience." OSI surgeons represent seven separate physicians' groups from geographically diverse parts of the Portland area, and specialize in procedures including pain management, spine, hip and knee replacement, shoulder replacement, sports surgery, hand surgery, and trauma surgery. "The inherent problem is total joint replacement surgery in a hospital is prohibitively and unpredictably expensive," says Dr. Jim Ballard, another OSI partner surgeon. "So, the idea of doing at least some of these procedures outpatient began to surface a few years ago. Today, we can do increasingly complex surgeries more effectively and more affordably in an outpatient setting. Over the past six years, we've been doing them for 35% less cost than in a hospital; patients are happy, and complication are rates lower. The problem was, our facilities weren't robust enough. We needed to build a place ideally suited for the more acute cases. With OSI we've built that futuristic model today and have room to grow." OSI was designed specifically with the needs of total joint replacement surgeries in mind – bigger operating rooms and recovery areas, wider hallways, hospital-scale cleaning and sterilization areas – and with 6,000 square feet of undeveloped space earmarked for the addition of facilities for overnight stays. "New Oregon law allows patients to stay 48 hours in an ASC," explains Dr. Ballard. "If they can stay 48 hours rather than the 24 hours possible now, we have two opportunities: "Bringing in Regent to help was one of the best things we did, without question," Dr. Ballard says. "They embraced our vision and worked seamlessly with us to create the first center in the Northwest designed primarily to treat outpatient total joint replacement and spine disorders."
