CSIR sanctioned LPU Scientist's Rs 43 Lakh Research Project on Technology that may replace X-Rays

JALANDHAR, India - June 4, 2018 - PRLog -- National Research & Development organization, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR, India) has sanctioned Rs 43 lakh (Rs. 42,94,500/-) grant for LPU Scientist Dr Niti Kant's research project. It is entitled as "Efficient Terahertz (THz) radiation during Laser-Plasma Interaction". Dr Kant is Associate Professor at Department of Physics of Lovely Professional University, whose research endeavour is a revolutionary step in the field of radiation and imaging thereof. It will lead to a painless and effective radiation therapy for a cancer patient. In comparison to X-Rays' imaging, Terahertz (THz) is non-ionizing radiation, which does not damage tissues and DNA.  It is also helpful in Defence areas by making easy detection of hidden explosives and mines, without destructing them dangerously. Along with Dr Niti Kant, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal congratulated all of the scientists at the university who are regularly bringing novel research and development works at the campus.

In place of X-Rays, world is now ready for T-rays (terahertz rays). Invisible to the eye and undetectable by most sensors, this small frequency of light called 'terahertz' earlier remained away from the scientists for more than a century. LPU scientists' research is to reveal amazing visual-results in the process. Using terahertz technology, a recent addition to the array of imaging tools, much can be seen beyond any surface. This has opened up new avenues in terahertz research. Imagine, without opening a book, one would be able to read all of its pages through 'T-Rays'.

Jubilant on prestigious approval of his project, Dr Niti Kant shared: "Some frequencies of THz radiation can penetrate several millimeters of tissue with low water content (e.g. fatty tissue) and reflect back. THz can also detect differences in water content and density of a tissue. Such methods allow effective detection of epithelial cancer, with a safer and less invasive or painful system using imaging. I and my team at LPU are ready to develop a theoretical model for efficient THz generation during laser-plasma interaction. Laser & plasma parameters would be optimized by our team for maximum efficiency through radiation."

Scientifically speaking, Dr Niti Kant's project aims to develop a theoretical model to produce efficient Terahertz (THz) radiation during laser-plasma interaction. Terahertz (THz) radiations are also known as sub millimeter radiations. THz radiation is much attracting field of research for last few decades due to its various applications in medical and biological imaging, remote sensing, material characterization, explosive detection and more.
