June 4, 2018 - PRLog -- A new drug treatment program intended to help halt prescription opioid use is being started in Aspen, Colorado.

Aspen Valley Hospital (AVH) is starting a drug treatment program that will center on several areas. The first goal is to cut the number of opioids that are prescribed in the emergency department with different forms of treatment. It also intends to teach medical professionals on the safest methods of prescribing opioids; to make sure that community is aware and that people comprehend the best ways of finding treatment.

AVH looks to expand upon the number of prescription collection boxes in Pitkin County.

AVH is attempting to replicate a Colorado Hospital Association program that accomplished their goal in reducing opioid prescription rates in numerous emergency rooms with a similar form of substance abuse treatment.

The high prescription rates in Pitkin County has been on going for a few years as there were 40,688 prescriptions dispersed in 2016, slightly down from 42,909 in 2015, according to a report by the Pitkin County Prescription Drug Profile.

AVG will be hosting a substance abuse awareness event on June 20 where the public will be asked to have discussions about the opioid epidemic and opioid prescriptions.
