LONDON, Ontario - June 14, 2018 - PRLog -- Salt is a natural mineral composed of sodium and chlorine. While this ingredient is mainly used for food seasoning, it has many other uses like playing an important role in sustaining human health. Sodium helps the nerve and muscle functions, regulation of bodily fluids, and controlling blood pressure. Chlorine helps with blood pressure as well, but also regulates pH level. As humans, we expel salt out of bodies by sweating and it's important to restore the sodium and chlorine that was lost, through a well-balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

There are many different types of salt, each form unique in its own way. While all of these salts have the same sodium chloride composition, some of them can be considered healthier and better for the body because of where they are located and how the salt is collected. Some examples of different types of salt include: table salt, sea salt, dead sea salt, and rock salt.

Table salt is the most commonly used salt. Harvested from underground slat deposits, it's ground finely, removing the impurities throughout the process. Table salt is also given an anti-caking treatment to keep it from being clumpy. Most table salt has iodine added in it to prevent iodine deficiency, which has been linked to things such as depression, weight gain, and difficulty with processing information. Table salt isn't considered the healthiest option due to how highly processed it is.

Sea salt is harvested form evaporated sea water and is coarser than table salt. Sea salt also contains more minerals such as zinc, potassium, and iron depending on where it was harvested from. However, just because it has more minerals does not mean it is better. It's better to get the mineral intake from fruits and vegetables than sea salt. A major problem occurring with sea salt as well is that it is still extracted from today's heavily polluted seas, making it much harder to be as pure as it should be.

Dead sea salt is very unique compared to the other salts. Being able to only harvest in one place, it is considered a prized commodity. Dead sea salt has the same minerals as sea salt, but a few more like calcium and manganese. The only problem with this type of salt is that it's high in bromide, which is a naturally occurring element that dissolves in water and can be toxic. Thankfully, with the extensive technology we have today, the once inedible dead sea salt can now be ingested. While Dead Sea salt can be considered by someone one of the healthier options, it is still extracted from a potential polluted sea and also can be extremely expensive since it only comes from one place on Earth.

Halite, also known as rock salt is one of the purest forms of salt in the world and is harvested underground, keeping it clean and fresh.  With its eighty-four natural minerals, rock salt isn't necessarily just used for cooking. Rock salt is also used for treatments like salt therapy ( https://www.salinetherapy.com/ ) a natural treatment for improving the respiratory system, mood, and skin conditions. The high mineral content gives this salt a bold flavor compared to the other ones. Rock salt is certainly one of the more beneficial types of salt offered. It's not as processed as table salt, doesn't come from heavily polluted seas, and isn't extremely expensive either.

Salt is a very important part of our diet and overall health. Each type of salt comes with its own different benefits. When choosing the salt that you believe suits you best, it is important to remember that anything you eat over the normal recommended intake can be problematic. Salt is no different. High sodium intake increases blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease. It is important to keep a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
