Smithers Rapra Announces the Second Webinar of a Four-Part Series on Rubber Compounding

AKRON, Ohio - Jan. 28, 2019 - PRLog -- Smithers Rapra, a world leader in rubber, plastics, and composites testing expertise, announced today the second webinar in a four-part series on rubber compounding led by Christine Domer, General Manager of Smithers Rapra's Chemical and Physical Testing Labs. The second installment, titled "Compounding 102: Fillers & Process Aids," will take place on Tuesday, January 29.

"Compounding 102" is set for 11am and will last roughly an hour. This free webinar will serve as a primer on the mechanisms of fillers and process oils as they relate to rubber compounding, including:

• Reinforcing fillers, specifically, carbon black and silica
• Non-reinforcing fillers, such as clay and talc
• Process oils, aids, and softeners, such as aromatic, naphthenic and paraffinic oils, and resins.

Domer will address specific considerations about these common fillers and process aids, such as structure and surface area, main material parameters, their impact on cost and performance, and which to use based on the application.

"This webinar series is a holistic look at rubber compounding that is useful for people at any level or position within a rubber company or an adjacent industry," said Dr. Jim Popio, Vice President, Smithers Rapra. "Christine's technical knowledge is such an asset that even the most experienced compounders can use her lessons on material selection as a resource to improve the performance and cost-effectiveness of their rubber products."

The next webinar topics in Domer's rubber compounding series include "Compounding 103: Cure Systems & Anti-Degradants" and "Compounding 104: Testing." Dates for these sessions will be announced following the second webinar.

Domer manages lab operations at the analytical chemistry and physical testing laboratories in Akron, Ohio. She has over 30 years of material science (https://www.smithersrapra.com/about-us/experts/chemical-a...) experience in the tire and rubber industries, with special expertise in raw materials, cure development engineering, compounding, reinforcements, and processing in both tire and non-tire applications.
