DUBAI, UAE - May 30, 2019 - PRLog -- As many of you probably know, our good saint comes on the white horse from St Nicholas. Saint Nicholas is a canonized bishop from the Ancient Greek city of Myra (see above), which is now the city of Demre in Turkey. The remains of the body of St. Nicholas have been a tourist attraction for centuries and are therefore in great demand all over the world. But nobody knows where they really are ...

The search for Saint Nicholas
Is the best man perhaps in Turkey? Or still in Italy? Last October Turkish archaeologists discovered with radars an undamaged space under the Saint Nicholas church in Demre, which is located near Antalya in Turkey . The Turkish archaeologists might have hoped to find remains of St Nicholas here. One problem: according to many theologians, the body of the good saint is already in Bari and Venice  in Italy . These two cities now claim to have half the body of St. Excavations must now show whether the body of Sinterklaas is still intact in its birthplace Demre.

Big question marks around the grave
How did that body spread? Probably sailors have already partially cleared the tomb of Saint Nicholas in Myra around the beginning of the eleventh century. They then brought the remains of St Nicholas to Bari. Later, the rest of the remains of the good saint were taken from the grave by crusaders and taken to Venice. Why? Perhaps these seafarers and crusaders wanted to protect the physical remains of St Nicholas, his relics, against Turkish Muslims. Or maybe they just wanted money. Relics were in fact worth a lot for monasteries and churches.

The discovery of the undamaged space under the St. Nicholas Church in Demre questions the above story. Maybe he has just been there all along? Anyway, this space may well be before St Nicholas' time.

All in all, it is difficult to find out where the body really is. In 2009, Turkey argued that the body had to return from Bari to Demre, while there is now also a small chance that the body never left that country. And this while in addition to Turkey and Italy also some churches in France , Germany , the United States, Canada and many other countries claim to have a piece of the best man ... when they own these relics, it is now also about the attraction these things have to tourists. In 2017, the relics from Bari even flew over to Moscow. So they have already made a whole world trip.

A visit to Myra
Whether or not the body of Sinterklaas can be found in Myra, this ancient city in Turkey is definitely a beautiful place to visit. The ruins in the rock face at least show that this is a place of many old stories. But don't expect to be alone! Because whether or not the body of Saint Nicholas is still there ... it remains an attraction for many tourists.
