Pop Culture Classroom was founded in 2010 and is a charitable organization that educates through alternative approaches to literacy, learning, and character development. The organization creates programs for underserved students, schools, and communities via comic books, graphic novels, and related media and hosts workshops both at their location in west Denver and within Denver-area classrooms and after-school programs. Summer camps begin the week of May 27, 2019, and continue throughout the summer with offerings including: • Camp Pop Culture Con, May 27 - 31 • Comic Book Camp, June 10-14 • Camp Game On!, June 24-28 • Camp Manga Madness, July 8-12 • Role Playing Game Camp with League of Wayfinders, July 29- August 2 • Filmmaking Camp, August 12-16 Each camp is $350 per week-long session. New in 2019, Pop Culture Classroom will offer a variety of partial and full scholarships for camps and workshops in order to support families and students who would otherwise be unable to participate in PCC programs. Scholarship funds are provided on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted. Scholarships range from partial to full registration fees based on income and availability of funds. Scholarships are awarded to families and students who demonstrate an interest in the arts, dedication to learning, and financial need. "Pop culture can often be seen as "fluff", but when you dig deep, there is quite a lot of educational value," stated Matt Slayter, Classroom Programming Coordinator for Pop Culture Classroom. "Through the study and creation of comics, games, film/tv, and cosplay, we are not only harnessing students' existing interests, but we are developing students critical thinking skills, literacy skills, project management skills, problem solving skills, and a slew of others, without the students even knowing." Registration for Pop Culture Classroom's summer camps is now open on the website.
