DCF Launches New Tuition-Free Four-Year College Prep Program

East Orange, NJ: Dorson Community Foundation, a non-profit that has been serving inner-city youth in Essex County, New Jersey for over 25 years, has launched the Dorson Scholars Program, a new tuition-free, four-year, college prep program. Throughout their four years of high school, a selected cohort of Dorson Scholars will engage in year-round programming that offers college readiness skill-building, career development, SAT exam prep, and college advising to prepare them for admission to the colleges of their dreams. Scholars will also gain the opportunity to apply for two all-expenses paid summer enrichment scholarships: three weeks at the Cornell University Summer College Program, where students take a college course and earn credit, and one month abroad with the Student Diplomacy Corps, where students receive culturally immersive experiences in countries around the globe.

Dorson Community Foundation is currently recruiting highly-motivated 9th graders for its inaugural cohort of 15-20 Dorson Scholars. Executive Director, Natasha Scott, believes the Program's cohort model will create a more intimate and supportive environment where each student receives ample attention. Scott stated: "The cohort will allow us to build community and encouragement among a group of similarly highly-motivated students. Throughout all four years of high school, the cohort will grow together and support each other on their journeys to college."

More importantly, the new program requires the full engagement and commitment of both parents and students to ensure that students will realize their full potential with the goal of continuing on to higher education. By the end of the four-year program, Dorson Scholars will have developed a sense of personal, college and career awareness while possessing the tools and self-confidence to succeed in college and beyond.

Applications close Monday, September 30th, 2019. The program is scheduled to begin classes on Tuesday, November 5th.
