By: 9 The Gallery A prolific pianist, vocalist and songwriter, Jarnagin will also perform a live set of authentic music that accompanies her abstract landscapes at the gallery on First Friday. "There's something magical in that Oklahoma red dirt," Jarnagin says. Born in Oklahoma and immigrating to the wilderness of northern British Columbia, Jarnagin had few boundaries during her childhood. Freedom, trust and hard work were key, principles she continues to apply to her creative pursuits in both music and the visual arts. Jarnagin began an extensive music writing career nine years ago. She has written over four hundred songs and recorded twelve original albums, working with industry professionals in both LA and Nashville. Although piano studies were always extensive, Jarnagin was also passionate about the visual arts. In eighth grade, Jenny was one of a few students from the Okanogan Valley in British Columbia that received an invite to draw nudes at a local university. She pursued an undergraduate degree in Piano Performance, but also took art classes in life drawing and design. Eventually, the demands of piano studies, including a stint in St. Petersburg, Russia, rubbed out the time for her visual art studies. Jenny received a master's degree in music from Northern Arizona University in 2008. Three years ago, Jarnagin picked up her paint brush again and with the help of Kathy Taylor's Studio 6020 art classes, she continues to grow as an artist. Jarnagin has made her home in Phoenix since 2002. Phoenix, Arizona has been the heart of Jenny's artist and music community, but she still keeps a bottle of red dirt on her piano and on her art table to inspire her as she creates. Jenny Jarnagin: Big Earth runs through the month of November at {9} The Gallery. {9} The Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located in Phoenix's Historic Grand Avenue District.
