D.C. Competitive Cannabis Market & Seth Rogan Launches Houseplant CA

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - March 10, 2021 - PRLog -- In Washington D.C, two competing proposals to allow recreational cannabis sales in the district are introduced, as a political shift in Congress paves the way for the potential new market. Though D.C. residents voted to legalize the possession and personal cultivation of marijuana for adults 21 and older back in 2014, Republican lawmakers have continuously blocked the district from using tax revenue to set up a regulatory system, through an annual federal budget rider. The recent Democrat takeover of both congressional chambers has now sparked optimism that the rider will either be revoked or permitted to lapse, with sales projected to launch as early as the end of this year. Just days after Mayor Muriel Bowser unveiled her plan to legalize retail cannabis sales, D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson released his own comprehensive reform bill. Both measures include priority business licensing for social equity applicants, automatic expungements of marijuna-related convictions, and cannabis delivery provisions. The mayor's proposed sales tax rate is higher at 17 percent, compared to Mendleson's 13. Her plan also gives some licensing preference to residents and veterans, while the councilman's bill prioritizes existing MMJ companies. There are further disparities regarding tax revenue distribution, licensing fees and types, as well as requirements for those working in the industry. Mendleson's legislation could have an advantage over Bowser's due to its broader council support, endorsement from advocacy group the Drug Policy Alliance, and his position as chairman to control committee referrals. Industry analysts predict D.C.'s adult-use cannabis market could generate as much as 200 million dollars annually within 4 years of its launch.

In the entertainment sector, actor Seth Rogan announces the upcoming launch of his cannabis brand, Houseplant, into the California market. Three flower strains, including two sativas and one indica, will be available via delivery from the company's website beginning March 11th, with products expected to reach dispensaries across the state this Spring. A line of complementary home goods, like vinyl records, ashtrays and a tabletop lighter, will accompany the rollout, and will be shipped nationwide. The news is generating a high level of anticipation, as Rogan's recent announcement over Twitter caused the brand's website to crash due to an overwhelming amount of traffic overloading the servers. Houseplant, which Rogan founded with filmmaker and creative partner Evan Goldberg, debuted in Canada in 2019 under cannabis giant Canopy Growth, who are not involved in the brand's American launch. While the company's Canadian line offers THC-infused beverages, pre-rolls, and capsules, it's not clear when or if those products will be coming to the U.S. market.
