The study calculated a sustainability score for each city. The score considered factors like the greenhouse gas emissions per capita, the transportation patterns of commuters, and the mix of renewable energy in each city. AdvisorSmith divided the cities into three groups based on population size. Small cities were those with up to 150,000 residents. Midsize cities included cities with between 150,000 and 350,000 residents, while large cities were those with over 350,000 residents in the metropolitan area. From their research, AdvisorSmith found that the most sustainable small, midsize, and large cities were Oak Harbor, WA; Santa Cruz, CA; and New York City, NY.
