It used data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries to rank the jobs based on the rate of fatal occupational injury per 100,000 workers. To calculate the fatal injury rate, AdvisorSmith took the number of fatalities divided by the number of jobs in a given occupation for a given year. They normalized the fatality rate per 100,000 workers in order to compare professions with differing levels of employment. To calculate the fatal injury rate, they calculated the fatal injury rate for 2019. In the U.S., the average fatality rate among all jobs was 3.4 per 100,000 workers. Between 2014 and 2018, deaths on the job rose 4,821 to 5,250, a nine percent increase over the five years. From their research, AdvisorSmith determined the most dangerous job was logging. Logging was 21 times more dangerous than the average job nationwide. In 2019, 46 loggers died while the fatal injury rate was 70 per 100,000 workers. Self-employed workers were 3.3 times more likely to die on the job than hourly and salaried workers. Wage and salaried workers had an average fatality rate of 2.9 fatalities per 100,000 workers, while self-employed workers had an average fatality rate of 9.4 per 100,000.
