CT Shoreline Fire Departments Food Drive on April 9 Will Benefit Shoreline Soup Kitchens & PantriesThe need for food donations remains strong this year as the continuing economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to a 30 percent increase in attendance at the SSKP
Fire departments already committed to receive donations during the April 9th food drive are the Old Saybrook Fire Department (OSFD), which will be located at the Wal-Mart in the Old Saybrook Shopping Old Saybrook. In addition, donations will be accepted at the Old Saybrook Fire Department Headquarters at 310 Main Street. Donations are also being accepted at the Westbrook Fire Department at 15 South Main Street; the Essex Fire Department at 11 Saybrook Road; the Clinton Fire Department at 35 East Main Street and the Clinton Stop & Shop; The North Madison Fire Department, 864 Opening Hill Road, and Roberts Food Center, North Madison, CT; Chester Hose Company, 6 High St., Chester, CT, and the Deep River Fire Dept, 57 Union Street, Deep River, CT In addition, new drop-off spots this year are located at the Parthenon Diner on Boston Post Road in Old Saybrook; Mirsina's restaurant on Main Street in Old Saybrook; the Essex Savings Bank on Main Street in Old Saybrook; and the Scotch Plains Tavern on Westbrook Road in Essex. All of these locations are accepting non-perishable food donations during their regular business hours through Saturday, April 9th. At a time of year when food donations remain low, this food drive will help to restock the pantries and ensure that everyone in our local communities will have a place at the table. Please join the effort by donating food or by holding a food drive in your neighborhood, workplace, or club, and then bringing the donations to one of the participating shoreline firehouses on Saturday, April 9th between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Please note that these participating fire departments can only accept food during the food drive on Saturday, April 9th. Please do not drop off food before that date. The most needed food items are shelf-stable milk; tuna; soup; canned fruits and vegetables (corn, peas and carrots, mixed vegetables, baked beans); white rice in boxes or bags; dried beans; fruit juice; pasta and sauce; and cereal and oatmeal. In addition, donations can be made by check. Please make the check payable to SSKP (with "FD Drive" in the memo field) and drop off the check on Saturday, April 9th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at one of the participating fire stations. This year's food drive will feature local TV and radio personalities, including Gil Simmons, Chief Meteorologist for NEWS 8 WTNH, and talk-show host Lee Elci, the morning personality on his popular Lee Elci Show on 94.9 FM News Now-Stimulating Talk. Both Simmons and Elci will be joining firefighters and volunteers on Saturday morning collecting food items at OSFD Headquarters at 310 Main Street in Old Saybrook. The Shoreline Soup Kitchens & Pantries and participating shoreline fire departments also want to extend their special thanks to this year's Food Drive Media Sponsors including Shore Publishing/Harbor News, 94.9 FM News Now-Stimulating Talk, Soft Rock WBMW 106.5, and Jammin' 107.7 FM, which will host a live broadcast from the OSFD Headquarters during the April 9th food drive.
