WANTAGH, N.Y. - Feb. 28, 2022 - PRLog -- Pulse Center for Patient Safety Education and Advocacy, born after the death of the founder's young son from a preventable medical error thirty years ago, started as a small support group in a church in Freeport, NY.

Now, in Pulse's 25th year, its goal is to have patients and families share their stories for others to learn from, and to help medical professionals understand the impact of medical errors while encouraging the public to act more as partners in their own care and safety. Ilene Corina, President and founder of Pulse explains it this way: "The policies and standards are set in the boardrooms, but the patient is the one who is affected 100% of the time.  We need to be sure patients as well as their families understand how they can be full partners for the best possible outcomes."

Due to Covid-19, families are kept out of hospitals and away from their loved ones, so Pulse is promoting "Constant Remote Advocacy", (https://youtu.be/hFJE6NymC08) a way for the family and friends of a patient to stay in touch twenty-four hours a day by connecting remotely via mobile devices, in hospitals or when visiting a doctor.

Corina explains, "Now more than ever, the public must understand safe patient care, and how errors happen."  Turning to virtual media, Pulse expanded across the country with its work promoting The TakeCHARGE Campaign: 5 Steps to Safer Health Care (https://takecharge.care/) (https://takecharge.care) which offers a few basic ways people can become better informed and more involved, and support each other.

The program grew so fast that a two-day virtual symposium (https://pulsecenterforpatientsafety.org/2022-symposium/) and 2022 TakeCHARGE Campaign kickoff will be held during Patient Safety Awareness Week (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHN5QNv4kfk&t=2s) on March 18th and 19th 2022, with ten sessions for learning more about each of the 5  "TakeCHARGE" Steps. CEUs are available to social workers, Board-Certified Patient Advocates (BCPA) and Certified Practitioners of Healthcare Quality (CPHQ).
