Speakers Supervisor Katrina Foley, Congresswoman Katie Porter, Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris, survivors and family members affected by gun violence, students, as well as "gun sense" elected officials and candidates were on stage. Congresswoman Katie Porter (D-CA) is a mother and she quickly let the rally crowd know that she is "fed up with the Republicans in Washington." Supervisor Katrina Foley pointed out that "firearms are used in 74% of homicides. We must come together and use the month of June to thoughtfully and seriously consider the best way to end the surge in gun violence. I've supported reforms since I was Mayor of Costa Mesa. "Since joining the Orange County Board of Supervisors a little more than a year ago, we've witnessed several tragedies including the murder of Aiden Leos on the freeway who was shot in the back in his car seat as his mom drove him to preschool, a shooting that claimed the life of 4 individuals and one child from the City of Orange, and the recent deadly shooting in Laguna Woods by a Las Vegas resident that claimed the life of a beloved local physician, Dr. John Cheng," said Supervisor Katrina Foley. Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris began her speech with the words, "I am here tonight as a Mom." She let the attendees know that "we do not have to live in a world filled with gun violence." Of any segment of our population, children are more at risk than any other group. "More pre-school kids will die than police officers." The rally is in light of recent violence across Orange County and the nation, including the mass shooting in Buffalo and the Uvalde, Texas, school shooting. In his recent address, President Biden pointed out that 233 mass shootings this year. Bethany Webb, who organized the event, is the sister and daughter of two of the victims of the Seal Beach mass shooting, the worst ever in Orange County. She called on attendees to "raise kids to respect ballots, not bullets" and urge everyone to vote out the Republican lawmakers blocking gun reform. "Vote like your life depends on it because it does!
